Enhanced Care Frequently Asked Questions
Have a question? We’re here to help. Explore some frequently asked questions below and contact us if your question isn’t here.
What is Enhanced Care and who lives in Enhanced Care? What are the benefits of Enhanced Care?
- Enhanced Care offers an inclusive care package and staff dedicated to the area.
- Enhanced Care residents benefit from our Pathways to Wellness Program, which includes weekly RN visits to monitor symptoms associated with complex care needs, like CHF and more, with a goal of preventing health crises, reducing hospitalization and promoting wellness.
- We also include a Fall package in Enhanced Care.
- Enhanced Care residents are invited to be a part of activities in the larger community, but for those who aren’t able, we will provide individual recreational programing. We will create an individual recreational plan of care. We focus on comfort and customization of resident interests and wants into care plan (i.e., blueberry pancakes for breakfast)
- We have Stepping Stones that we use to keep our residents in Enhanced Care on the path to wellness. That path is different for each individual but can look like this – Weekly RN visits and symptom monitoring, diabetic support, spiritual care, music, 1:1 visit – all with your health and quality of life goals directing us.
- Regular nurse rounds and safety checks are included.
- Inclusion of incontinence products, diabetic support services, PRNs, Level I & II specialized diets, the Fall package and 2-person transfers, makes the price of our care package a cost-effective option for those living in assisted living who need a high level of care.
- For those who want to be a part of Riley Crossing activities and meals, all escorts to these activities are included in the pricing.
- Enhanced care environment is warm, inviting, cozy and homelike with great common areas.
- Staff education and supervision.
What conditions or health issues might someone have that would benefit from Enhanced Care?
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), Congestive Heart Failure (CHF), Diabetes, Obesity, Complex Conditions, Paralysis, Parkinson’s Disease are some of the common conditions that we see in our Enhanced Care neighborhood. These are often conditions that have greatly impacted the individual’s health in many ways. You certainly could still have these conditions, not need Enhanced Care or any personal care services, and live fine on your own.
How would I know if I needed Enhanced Care vs. Assisted Living?
There’s not a simple or exact science to when you need Enhanced Care. You may choose Enhanced Care over Assisted living if you wanted a lower staff to resident ratio. Enhanced Care may be a better option financially if you’re a la carte personal care charges were more than Enhanced Care costs. If you have more complex care needs or heavier cares (2-person transfers, high chronic care needs, higher medical needs without having daily skilled nursing needs), it may be better to consider Enhanced Care over Assisted Living, even though you can get all of the same care in Assisted Living apartment homes. You may also consider Enhanced Care if you or a loved one has: Exceeded a Medicare-paid rehabilitation stay but needs more care before returning home, need to give their caregiver a break from caregiving, need for a peaceful, supportive environment for hospice and end-of-life care.
What are the alternatives to a nursing home or skilled nursing facility?
We believe that Enhanced Care is a great alternative to a nursing home or skilled nursing facility because it offers a more homelike environment. You may also look into Home Care but that can get pricey and staffing is not guaranteed.
Why would I choose Enhanced Care over Skilled Nursing?
You would choose Enhanced Care over Skilled Nursing because you have your own private apartment, the warm environment – homelike setting, and 3-chef prepared meals per day. If you wanted your own skilled nursing services but wanted to live in Enhanced Care, we do allow you to bring in your own skilled nursing care and can provide resources on who to hire.
Are Care Suites and Enhanced Assisted Living the same thing as Enhanced Care? What is the difference?
Different name, same thing. Communities differ in layouts and environment. What’s included in their offerings, prices, and programming varies, but the concept is the same.
Do you offer care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week?
Yes, our trained resident caregivers/resident assistants are awake care staff that are present 24 hours per day and 7 days a week.
Can residents in Enhanced Care have visitors? What are the visiting hours and are there restrictions on visiting hours?
Yes, they may have visitors as per any of the other residents in the building. As this is our residents’ home, we welcome visitors and work with family and friends to find a time to visit their loved ones when it works best for them.
Can I live with my spouse in Enhanced Care?
Yes, you may live with your spouse in Enhanced Care.
Are Enhanced Care suites private rooms? What does the living space and suite look like or include in Enhanced Care?
What is the staffing care ratio in Enhanced Care?
Typically around 1:6, but it does vary from community to community based on needs in the community. There is always a trained care team member that is dedicated to that location.
How often are care conferences and who goes?
It depends on the situation, but every 6 months to a year, or as the care needs change in the individual. Care conferences are attended by the primary head nurse.
What do regular rounds look like? How many scheduled visits do we get from nursing staff and caregivers? What is a safety check and when do our loved ones in Enhanced Care receive them?
Regular nurse rounds are twice a day huddles, dedicated staff in the Enhanced Care area. You also receive weekly visits by the Registered Nurse. Caregivers as needs are scheduled are determined by the customized care plan.
A safety check is staff checking to make sure the resident is in their apartment and well 2x/day. You also receive regular nurse rounds.
Will my loved one receive one-on-one attention aside from personal care needs?
We have dedicated Activity Directors that create a full calendar of events for social wellbeing. Occasionally, we have volunteers at Riley Crossing as well that enjoy spending time with residents that would benefit from that.
Is there a Registered Nurse in the building and will be caring for my loved one?
Yes, but not 24/7. There is an RN on call for any changes of condition.
Are there extra charges for the pendant pushes? What is the staff response time after a pendant push?
There are no extra charges for emergency pendant pushes, this is included in the basic home care charges for Enhanced Care residents. Response time varies based on time of day and the shared care environment.
Does Medicare cover Enhanced Care?
No, this is private pay only. There are funding options like Long-Term Care insurance that our Outreach & Sales Director can walk through with you to see if there are any additional payment options available to you.
What medical or incontinence products are included with Enhanced Care?
All incontinence products (briefs, wipes), diabetic support services, PRNs, Level I & II specialized diets, the Fall package and 2-person transfers are included in Enhanced Care. This makes the price of our Enhanced Care package a cost-effective option for those living in assisted living who need a high level of care.
How much does it cost to live in your community and what all is included? How does the pricing structure work? Do furnished apartments cost more?
